People who lose their jobs in the recession are to be offered specialist counselling for depression and anxiety, it was revealed.

The scheme, announced by Health Secretary Alan Johnson and Work and Pensions Secretary James Purnell, reflects Government fears that the downturn could drive up levels of mental illness and long-term unemployment.
